Did Einstein ever take an IQ test?

There is no reliable record that he did, and the history of intelligence testing explains why.

  • 1905: Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon publish the first practical intelligence scale in France, to identify schoolchildren who needed extra help. Einstein was 26 and about to publish the papers that made his name.
  • 1912: The German psychologist William Stern proposes the “intelligence quotient”, a ratio of mental age to chronological age.
  • 1916: Lewis Terman publishes the Stanford-Binet test, which popularises IQ scoring in the English-speaking world. Einstein was 37.
  • 1917 onwards: Group tests are used to screen army recruits in the United States, and testing spreads to schools.
  • 1939: David Wechsler publishes the first of the scales that became the modern standard.

In other words, IQ tests were built for children, schools and recruits, not for established scientists. By the time testing became routine, Einstein was already one of the most famous people in the world. Stories that claim he took a test at some point do not come with a source, such as a score sheet, a psychologist’s report or a contemporary document, so they cannot be verified.

Where does the 160 estimate come from?

You will find several numbers online. 160 is the most common, followed by figures in the 170s, 180s and 190s, and a few far higher. They appear in articles, quizzes and social posts, but none of them cites a test. The pattern suggests popular estimation: Einstein became the cultural symbol of genius, so writers gave him a score high enough to sound extraordinary, and the number was then repeated until it looked like a fact.

Estimating the IQ of a historical figure is possible in principle. The best-known attempt is psychologist Catharine Cox’s 1926 study of 300 eminent people, which scored childhood achievements recorded in biographies. The method is widely regarded as unreliable because it depends on how much was written about someone’s early years, and her sample covered people born between 1450 and 1850, so Einstein was not part of it.

How to spot an unreliable IQ claim

Ask three questions: which test was used, who gave it, and where is the record? If the answer to all three is missing, the number is an opinion, however confidently it is stated.

What would an IQ of 160 mean?

Modern IQ tests such as the Wechsler scales compare your performance with a large reference group and convert it to a “deviation IQ”. The average is set at 100 and the standard deviation, a measure of spread, at 15. That gives a predictable pattern: about two-thirds of people score between 85 and 115, and about 95 in 100 score between 70 and 130.

Why the scale matters

An IQ of 160 is not one fixed level of ability. On a standard scale (standard deviation 15) it is about 1 in 31,600. On the older Stanford-Binet scale (standard deviation 16) it is about 1 in 11,300, and on the Cattell scale (standard deviation 24) it is only about 1 in 160. Always ask which scale a quoted IQ is on.

Why very high scores are hard to measure

Very few people are in the sample used to standardise a test, so scores above roughly 145 are largely statistical extrapolations. Two further problems make historical comparisons difficult. Raw scores rose by about three points per decade through much of the twentieth century, the so-called Flynn effect, so tests are periodically re-standardised and old and new scores are not directly comparable. And different tests use different scales, as the calculator shows.

How Einstein said he thought

Thought experiments. Einstein later recalled that at about 16 he imagined chasing a beam of light and asked himself what he would see. He described this puzzle as an early seed of relativity.

Images rather than words. In a reply to the mathematician Jacques Hadamard, published in 1945, Einstein wrote that words and language did not seem to play any role in his thinking. The building blocks, he said, were signs and images, some visual and some muscular, which he combined freely, and only later did he search for conventional words to express them. This points to unusually strong visual and spatial reasoning, though it is a self-description rather than a test result.

Persistence. Einstein spent roughly the last three decades of his life searching for a unified field theory that would connect gravity and electromagnetism. He did not succeed, which shows how much of scientific achievement is patient effort on hard problems.

Collaboration. Genius rarely works alone. His friend Marcel Grossmann introduced him to the mathematics of curved spaces that general relativity needed, and Einstein thanked his patent-office colleague Michele Besso in the 1905 relativity paper as a valued sounding board.

Curiosity. In a letter to the biographer Carl Seelig dated 11 March 1952, Einstein wrote, “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” He was being modest, but the point stands: curiosity drove his work.

What studies of Einstein’s brain found

After Einstein died in 1955, the pathologist Thomas Harvey removed his brain during the autopsy, kept it for decades and sent sections to researchers. Several studies followed, and they are often quoted in discussions of his IQ.

  • 1985: Marian Diamond and colleagues reported a higher ratio of glial cells to neurons in part of the left association cortex than in the comparison brains.
  • 1999: Sandra Witelson and colleagues, writing in The Lancet, reported that his parietal lobes, regions linked to spatial and mathematical thinking, were about 15% wider than those of 35 men and 56 women of normal intelligence, and that a groove in the brain’s surface followed an unusual path, which they suggested could allow more connections between regions.
  • 2013: Dean Falk and colleagues analysed photographs of the brain and described unusual folding patterns in several areas, including the prefrontal cortex.

These findings are interesting, but they come with serious limits. It is a single brain, examined after death, compared with small groups of other brains, and no IQ score is available to link to any feature. The studies cannot show that these features caused his ideas, and they cannot produce an IQ estimate.

IQ versus genius

IQ tests measure a specific set of abilities, such as reasoning, working memory, processing speed and verbal comprehension. They do not directly measure creativity, curiosity, motivation, specialist knowledge, or the luck of being in the right place at the right time. Genius in the sense we apply to Einstein needs all of these.

Accounts of Lewis Terman’s long-running study of high-IQ children, which began in the 1920s, make the point. Two children who were tested but did not meet the IQ cut-off, William Shockley and Luis Alvarez, later won Nobel Prizes in Physics, while none of the selected children won a Nobel Prize. Researchers point out that this is partly a statistical effect, because Nobel Prizes are so rare that almost any group would have missed them.

That does not mean ability is irrelevant. Long-running research on mathematically gifted adolescents, the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth, found that higher early reasoning ability was linked with greater later achievement in science and technology, even within the top 1%. The sensible conclusion is that high reasoning ability helps, but it is not enough on its own.

What made Einstein exceptional besides raw ability

  • Deep conceptual thinking: he asked why the laws of physics look the way they do rather than only how to calculate results.
  • Independence from authority: he was willing to question the assumptions of Newtonian physics.
  • Persistence: he stayed with difficult problems for years.
  • Timing and training: physics in the early 1900s was ready for a new picture of space and time, and he had the mathematical grounding to provide it.
