What does an IQ percentile mean?

A percentile shows where a score sits compared with everyone else. If your IQ is at the 90th percentile, you scored higher than about 90% of people your age, and about 10% scored higher than you.

IQ tests are designed so that scores follow a bell curve, with an average of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. That is why every IQ score maps to a fixed percentile. Our guide to how IQ is calculated explains the formula behind this.

Percentile is not the same as percentage. An IQ of 130 does not mean you got 97.7% of the questions right. It means you scored higher than about 97.7% of people your age. You could answer far fewer questions correctly and still reach a high percentile if the test is hard.

IQ percentiles and standard deviations

You will often see IQ scores described in standard deviations (SD). On the standard scale, each standard deviation is 15 points:

  • Average (0 SD): IQ 100, the 50th percentile.
  • 1 SD above average: IQ 115, the 84th percentile. About 68% of people score between 85 and 115.
  • 2 SD above average: IQ 130, the 97.7th percentile. About 95% of people score between 70 and 130. This is the usual gifted IQ threshold.
  • 3 SD above average: IQ 145, the 99.87th percentile. About 99.7% of people score between 55 and 145.
  • 4 SD above average: IQ 160, the 99.997th percentile, or about 1 in 31,500.

IQ percentile chart by age

You do not need a different chart for each age. IQ tests compare you only with people of the same age, so the percentiles in this chart apply to children, teenagers and adults alike. A 12-year-old with an IQ of 120 and a 50-year-old with an IQ of 120 are both at the 91st percentile, each compared with their own age group.

What changes with age is the raw score behind the IQ: how many questions someone needs to answer correctly to reach a given percentile. That is handled by the test's age-based norm tables, not by the IQ scale itself.

IQ percentile chart for women and men

The same chart applies to everyone. IQ tests are normed on both women and men, and a given score has the same percentile regardless of sex.

Why very high and very low percentiles are less precise

This chart uses the mathematical bell curve, which is exact on paper. Real tests are less precise at the extremes, for two reasons.

  • Few people are tested at the extremes. A test's norm sample of a few thousand people contains very few scores above 145 or below 55, so those percentiles rest on less data.
  • Every score has a margin of error. A professionally measured IQ usually comes with a confidence range of several points either side. At the 99.9th percentile, a few points make a large difference to rarity.

Some older or specialist tests also use a different scale, such as a standard deviation of 16 or 24, where the same percentile produces a different number. The IQ calculator and scale converter in our IQ calculation guide can convert between them.

What IQ is the 92nd percentile?

The 92nd percentile corresponds to an IQ of about 121 on the standard scale.

What IQ is the 25th percentile?

The 25th percentile corresponds to an IQ of about 90, the lower edge of the average range.

What percentile is an IQ of 40?

An IQ of 40 is four standard deviations below average, at about the 0.003rd percentile. Scores this low are rare and are usually assessed with specialist tests rather than standard IQ tests.

Is there a different IQ percentile chart by age?

No. IQ scores are already adjusted for age, because each person is compared with others the same age. The same percentile chart applies to children, teenagers and adults.

Percentiles are calculated from the normal distribution with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, the scale used by the Wechsler tests (WAIS-5, WISC-V) and the Stanford-Binet 5.
