How this quick IQ test works

  1. Answer 12 multiple-choice questions. They start easy and get harder. There is no time limit, but a timer shows how long you take.
  2. Pick one answer per question. You can go back and change an answer before you finish.
  3. Get your result instantly. You see your score out of 12, an estimated IQ range, your time and a breakdown by skill.
  4. Review every answer. Each question comes with a short explanation, so you can see exactly where you went wrong.

What does a quick IQ test measure?

Full IQ tests, such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, measure several abilities over an hour or more. A quick IQ test samples the core ones in a few minutes. This test includes four types of question:

Question typeWhat it testsExample of the style
Number seriesNumerical reasoning and spotting rules5, 10, 20, 40, ?
Verbal reasoningVocabulary, analogies and word meaningHot is to cold as up is to ?
LogicDeduction from given factsIf all cats are animals, is every cat an animal?
Patterns and puzzlesFluid reasoning and problem-solvingFind the odd one out in a group

These examples are different from the 12 test questions, so reading them won't give away any answers. To learn more about what full tests include, read what an IQ test measures.

What your quick IQ test score means

After the test you get an estimated IQ range based on how many questions you answered correctly. Here is how the ranges compare with the standard IQ scale, where the average is 100:

Correct answersEstimated IQ rangeDescription
12 of 12130 or aboveVery high
11125 to 129Very high
9 to 10115 to 124Above average to high
7 to 8105 to 114Average to above average
5 to 695 to 104Average
0 to 4Below 95Low average or below. Try the full test for a fairer result.

Be honest with yourself about what this means. Twelve questions are a small sample, and this quick test has not been standardised on a representative group of people. Treat your range as a rough, fun guide rather than a measured IQ. For more context, see what a good IQ score is, check the exact percentile for any IQ, or read whether 100 is a good IQ.

How accurate is a quick IQ test?

A quick IQ test is good for curiosity and practice, but it is less accurate than a long test. Three things limit it:

  • Fewer questions mean more luck. With 12 questions, one lucky guess or one careless slip can move your range a whole band.
  • No norm group. Professional tests compare you with thousands of people your age. A short online quiz cannot do that properly.
  • No supervision. Distractions, tiredness and your device can all affect an online result.

Even full clinical IQ tests have a margin of error of about 5 points either side. If you want to understand the research, our guide to whether online IQ tests are accurate explains what they can and cannot tell you.

Tips for your best quick IQ test score

  • Find a quiet five minutes. Put your phone on silent and close other tabs.
  • Read every question twice. Most mistakes on easy questions come from misreading them.
  • Look at the gaps in number series. Write down the difference between each number. The rule is often hiding there.
  • Eliminate wrong answers. If you are unsure, cross out the options that clearly don't fit, then choose.
  • Don't rush. There is no time limit, and accuracy matters more than speed for your score.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a quick IQ test I can take for free?

Yes. The quick IQ test on this page is free, has 12 questions and takes about 5 minutes. You get an instant estimated IQ range and every answer explained, with no sign-up or email.

How long does an IQ test take?

This quick IQ test takes about 5 minutes. Our full online IQ test has 36 questions and a 25 minute limit. A professional IQ test given by a psychologist usually takes 60 to 90 minutes.

How accurate is a 5-minute IQ test?

A 5-minute IQ test gives only a rough estimate. With so few questions, one guess or slip can change your result, and short online tests are not normed like professional tests. Use it for fun and practice, not as a formal measurement.

Can a 12-question test measure IQ?

Not precisely. Twelve questions can give a rough idea of your reasoning skills, but a reliable IQ score needs many more questions across several abilities and a properly normed test.

What is a good score on a quick IQ test?

On this test, 9 or 10 correct answers suggest an above-average to high range, and 11 or 12 suggest a very high range. A score of 5 to 8 is in the average to above-average range.

What is the average IQ score?

The average IQ is 100 by design. About two thirds of people score between 85 and 115, and about 2% score 130 or above.

Do I need to sign up or give my email?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser, with no account, no email and no payment. Your result is shown instantly on the page.

Can I retake the quick IQ test?

Yes, as often as you like. Your second score will usually be higher because you have already seen the questions, so your first attempt is the fairest result.

Is this the same as a Mensa test?

No. Mensa only accepts results from supervised tests, such as its own proctored test or an approved test given by a psychologist. Online tests, including this one, are good for practice but are not accepted for membership.

Does the quick IQ test work on my phone?

Yes. The test works on phones, tablets and computers.
