Is 100 a Good IQ? What an IQ of 100 Really Means
The short answer: yes, 100 is a good, normal IQ. It is the exact average score by design, which puts you at the 50th percentile: higher than half of people your age, and lower than the other half.
An IQ of 100 sits in the middle of the average range of 90 to 109, where about half of all people score. Around two thirds of people score somewhere between 85 and 115.
An average IQ is enough to do well at school, earn a degree, hold a skilled job and learn almost anything with practice. IQ measures some thinking skills, not your worth, your talents or your future.
Key points
- 100 is the average IQ by definition, at every age, for children and adults alike.
- An IQ of 100 is at the 50th percentile and is labelled "Average" on the Wechsler scales.
- About 68% of people score between 85 and 115, so 100 is the most typical score there is.
- Effort, interests, personality and opportunity shape success far more than a few IQ points.
What does an IQ of 100 mean?
An IQ of 100 means you performed exactly in the middle of people your own age. IQ tests are scored against a large comparison group, called a norm sample, and the scoring is set so that the average person in that group gets 100. Every other score shows how far you are from that middle point, measured in standard deviations of 15 points.
So 100 is not a pass mark or a grade out of 100. It is simply the centre of the scale. A score of 115 is one standard deviation above it, and a score of 85 is one standard deviation below. We explain the full method in our guide to how IQ is calculated.
Is 100 a good IQ?
Yes. "Good" depends on what you compare it with, but an IQ of 100 is a healthy, normal score that is shared by more people than any other. Psychologists describe it as Average, not low, and it is well within the range where people study, work and live independently without any difficulty linked to intelligence.
It helps to remember what IQ tests actually measure: reasoning, verbal understanding, working memory, visual-spatial skills and processing speed. They do not measure creativity, practical know-how, social skills, motivation or expertise you build over years. Many people with average scores are highly successful because of those other strengths. If you want a wider view of the whole scale, see what a good IQ score is.
IQ 100 percentile: how many people score higher?
An IQ of 100 is at the 50th percentile. That means you scored higher than 50% of people and lower than 50%. Here is how the scores around 100 compare:
| IQ | Percentile | Out of 100 people, you score higher than | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 | 16th | About 16 | Low average |
| 90 | 25th | About 25 | Average |
| 95 | 37th | About 37 | Average |
| 100 | 50th | About 50 | Average (exact centre) |
| 105 | 63rd | About 63 | Average |
| 110 | 75th | About 75 | Above average |
| 115 | 84th | About 84 | Above average |
| 120 | 91st | About 91 | Very high |
A score of exactly 100 is itself not rare: about 2.7% of people score 100 on the dot, and about 26% score between 95 and 105. For the percentile of any other score, use our IQ percentile calculator.

The average IQ range explained
IQ scores follow a bell curve, with most people bunched around the middle. That is why 100 is so common:
- About 50% of people score between 90 and 110.
- About 68% score between 85 and 115, one standard deviation either side of 100.
- About 95% score between 70 and 130, two standard deviations either side.
On the latest Wechsler tests, scores of 90 to 109 are labelled Average, 80 to 89 Low Average, and 110 to 119 Above Average. Some older guides and websites call 110 to 119 "High Average", which you may still see online.
Is 100 IQ the average for adults and children?
Yes. Because IQ always compares you with people your own age, the average is 100 for a 10-year-old, a 13-year-old, a 30-year-old and a 70-year-old. A child with an IQ of 100 is right in the middle for their age group, just as an adult with 100 is in the middle for theirs. Your raw reasoning skills change with age, but your IQ score stays relative to your peers.
Why 100 is always the average
The number 100 comes from the first IQ tests. In the early 1900s, IQ was worked out as mental age divided by real age, multiplied by 100. A child whose mental age matched their real age scored exactly 100. Modern tests no longer use that formula, but they kept 100 as the centre of the scale.
There is a second reason the average stays at 100. Raw scores on IQ tests rose by about 3 points per decade through much of the 20th century, a trend known as the Flynn effect. To keep 100 as the true average, test publishers regularly re-norm their tests against new samples of people. That is why an old test can give a higher score than a new one: it is comparing you with an older, lower-scoring group.
What can you do with an IQ of 100?
Almost anything most people do. An average IQ is fully compatible with:
- finishing school and going to college or university
- learning a trade, a language or an instrument
- running a business or managing a team
- working in a skilled or professional role
Average IQ does differ between occupations, but every profession includes people across a wide range of scores, and the ranges overlap a great deal. Our guide to average IQ by profession shows the full data for 150 jobs. Research consistently finds that conscientiousness, persistence and practice are major predictors of success alongside intelligence.
Is 100 IQ smart?
An IQ of 100 means your reasoning ability is typical for your age, which is a perfectly capable level. "Smart" in everyday life usually reflects knowledge, judgement, curiosity and experience as much as test scores. Someone with an average IQ who reads widely and works hard will often outperform someone with a higher score who does not.
100 vs other IQ scores
- 100 vs 90: both are in the average range. 90 is at the 25th percentile.
- 100 vs 110: 110 is at the 75th percentile, at the start of the above-average range.
- 100 vs 115: 115 is one standard deviation above average, higher than 84% of people. See what an IQ of 115 means.
- 100 vs 120: 120 is where a high IQ starts, at about the 91st percentile. See what a high IQ is.
- 100 vs 130: 130 is the usual gifted threshold, higher than about 98% of people. See what an IQ of 130 means.
Scored 100 on an online test? Read this first
Every IQ test has a margin of error, usually around 5 points either side for a full clinical test, and more for a short online test. A result of 100 is best read as "somewhere around 95 to 105". Your score can also shift a few points depending on sleep, stress, focus and how familiar you are with the question types.
Online tests, including ours, give an estimate, not a diagnosis. Our guide on whether online IQ tests are accurate explains what they can and cannot tell you.
Can you raise an IQ of 100?
To a degree. A 2018 meta-analysis by Stuart Ritchie and Elliot Tucker-Drob found that each extra year of education raises IQ by roughly 1 to 5 points. Good sleep, regular exercise and practice with reasoning puzzles can also help you perform closer to your real ability on test day. Brain training apps, however, mostly improve the trained task rather than general intelligence. Our brain games are a fun way to test memory, focus and reaction time, but we do not claim they raise IQ.
